Zikr

Q:

Asalamu Alaykum,

Its been over 3 years now that my wife has been attendig a class two days a week its a zikr class. Since my wife started going to this class she has changed alot she now wears hijab, prays on time even if it means praying in caror even on the road, she always says stuff about this is haram thats haram which sometimes anoys me aswell, so one day she asked me to go to this class i went there and i was very confused in the way they do zikr. Normally zikr would be to recite Allahs names out loud in a group. However in this class they played naats in the background there was the teacher sitting on sofa and few people sitting on floor and the teacher says look into my eyes and during repeating Allahs blessed names he was doing some hand gestures and was saying im opening up the connections of your heart and Allah whilst moving his hands. This very confused me since that day i don’t feel good about my wife going to that class and have told her to do zikr at home and not go there but she keeps saying that she will leave me but not that class this has created alot of problems in our mariage aswell could you tell me if this is right way of doing zikr and whether i am wrong for stopping her.

Wa alaykum salam warahmatullah,

It is pleasing to note the devoted observance by your wife to the
performance of prayers on time, the practising hijab and awareness of the
prohibitions/ haram which you state has come about due to her attendance in
the ‘zikr’ sessions.
However based on your description of the ‘zikr’ session which you attended
one can not find such practices handed down to us from teachings of Qur’an
and ahadith of ahlul bayt a.s. Even there is no such ritual recommended by
the ulama kiram. Therefore one needs to be wary of practising such rites and
also of being party to such sessions. It would be best for you to lovingly
discuss this with your wife regarding this and offer that like her you too
would like to increase commitment to practising islam, but based on the
correct guidance of the teachings of Qur’an and ahadith of ahlul bayt a.s.

With salams and duas,

Fazle Abbas
