Ask an Alim

Wudhu problem due to severe gastric problem.

Q:

Sir , I have severe gastric problem so I cannot hold my wudhu more than half to one hour. I just want to ask that is it compulsory to make istinja for every time I make wudhu , If  one has not passed urine or anything else except gas? Can I just make wudhu only without doing istinja ,If I have passed only gas before next prayer?

A:

Salamun Alaykum

Thank you for your query.

1) You can pray with wudhu during the time period(half to one hour) when you do not pass wind.

But if there is a serious problem and illness where you can’t control passing the wind then according to according to Ayatullah al-Udhma Sayyid Ali Sistany:

Ruling 314. If someone suffers from an illness that does not allow him to stop passing wind, he must act in accordance with the duty of those who cannot control the discharge of urine and faeces.

You can read the other rulings from the link below

2) Istinja means to purify after one has passed urine or faeces. One has to make sure he is paak so he can pray but istinja is not required before every single wudhu rather one can perform istibra after instinja to make sure the fluid which comes out is not najis.

Question: Why should we do Istibra and how is it done?

Answer: Istibrāʾ is a recommended (mustaabb) act performed by men after urinating in order to be confident that no urine is left in the urethra, and its not compulsory to perform. It is performed by the following way: after urinating, the anus is first purified if it has become impure; then, the middle finger of the left hand is slid three times from the anus up to the scrotum; then, the thumb is placed on the penis and the forefinger is placed under the penis, and the thumb and forefinger are pulled three times along the penis up to the point of circumcision; finally, the end of the penis is pressed three times.
