Ask an Alim

writing to promote alcoholic activities

Q:

Assalam Alaikum,

Respected Sir,

I am a web content writer by profession and work for an online e-commerce store which is owned by a christian. Their products cover categories like gardening, home, kitchen, bathroom, party, summer (in short products related to basic necessities of life).

Along with this, they have some wine glasses, wine bottle shutter corks, etc (but don’t deal with alcohol).

The point of concern is that being a writer, I have to write titles, blogs, and other content for them in which I promote products by attracting them towards alcohol and other non-islamic topics.

However, I have written such sponsored posts once or twice a time. Still, it has put burden on my heart.

Please guide me? Is writing such content haram? And what should I do? Should I ask my team lead not to assign me such content?

I need a detailed guidance on this.

Waiting anxiously for your reply.

Regards,

Ushna Hassan

Wa-Alaykum Assalam Wa Rahmtu-Allah,

Alhamdulillah your “fitra” is guiding you! Your feelings are correct, you should not write to promote haram activities… If you were to write about certain activities where there is no haram in it such as a gardening, home, kitchen, bathroom etc, then there is no problem in it.
