Ask an Alim

Would it be considered as Fornication ?

Q:

If two people, who want to get married but do not live in the same country due to visa and financial issues get involved in seeing each other’s private parts on a video call by not being able to control sexual desires and later regret it deeply. They want to get married in a halal way and therefore limit their online interaction until they meet in person to marry. Is this seen as fornication? How can they repent and still be able to get married?

A:

Bismihi Ta’ala,
Salam Alaykum,

In the technical sense, no that act in itself would not be considered fornication. Although, it is a sin and immoral. If both you and your fiance cannot control yourselves then you may conduct a temporary marriage (mut’ah) before you finalize your permanent marriage. In the case where a temporary marriage is done by you two, you may look at each other as much as you want without committing any sin. That’s as best as I can think of. Good luck with everything.
