Ask an Alim

working in supermarket selling non halaal items

Q:

Salaamun Alaikum,

I used to work in a departmental store. However, now due to the CoVID the shop is closed and I will be made redundant. The company I work for owns a supermarket and the chances are that I may be re-deployed at the supermarket. Unfortunately I live in the western country where it is normal to consume alcohol and when I work on the checkout at the supermarket I will have to scan bottle of Alcohol and non halaal food. What is the ruling?
I understand that Islamically taking or paying interest I’d Haram but due to the culture we live in paying Or earning interest through financial institutions is permissible. Likewise is working in the supermarket and selling non halaal items is that permissible too?

A:

In the Name of Allah, the All-Beneficent, the All-Merciful.
Wa-Alaykum Assalam Wa Rahmtu-Allah,

No, it is not permissible.
