Validity of Divorce

Q:

Salam,

Someone got divorced and the people present were: the alim, the boy’s father, his brother, his friend and father of the girl.

I have read on your website that for the talaq to be valid, it must be witnessed by two adils. Is this person’s divorce valid?

Jazakallah

A:

Alaykum Salaam.

It is true that divorce is valid in the presence of two witnesses who are male and just, and other conditions of divorce being in place as well.
For a man to be just (‘adil), it is necessary for him not to have committed any major sin in public. If you confirm that the men present during this divorce were just, while the other conditions of divorce were
also in place, this divorce would be deemed valid.
