Hajj Despite Debts

Q:

S alaams, I have car loan and credit card debts but i pay on time alh every month so if i go for hajj then will it be accepted as wajib or Sunnat? Regards, Shabbar

A:

Salam Alaykum,

After consulting with Sheikh Murtadha Alidina, here is his answer:

According to Ayatollah Syed Sistani, if the person has a debt, his Hajj will not be Wajib. Unless: the debt is very long term (50 years for example).

If someone gifts you the money to go for Hajj, then your Hajj will be considered Wajib.

If you have excess money enough to cover the expenses of going to Hajj, you can gift it to someone with the condition that he then gifts you the trip to go for Hajj; this will then be acceptable and the Hajj will be considered as Wajib.
