Children of Prophet Muhammad (SAW)

Q:

Salaam,

I want to ask, according to shia belief how many children prophet Muhammad had and at what age they died and their names ?

A:

باسمه تعالی

Alaikum Salaam

We find in hadith that the holy Prophet (s) had 6 or 7 children from 2 wives (Hazrat Khadija and Maariya):

From Khadija (s):

  1. Qassim was his first son, who passed away at the age of 2.
  2. Zainab, his first daughter was born before Islam and passed away in the 8th year of Hijrah.
  3. Ruqayyah, was born before Islam and passed away 2 years after hijrah
  4. Um Kulthum was born in Makka and passed away in the 9th year of Hijrah.
  5. Hazrat fatemah (s) who was born in Makkah and lived a few months after the death of the Holy Prophet (s).
  6. Abdullah who was born after the declaration of Prophethood, but passed away in Makkah.

Ibrahim was his other son who was born from Mariya, but who passed away in his childhood.

In summary, all of the children of the the Holy Prophet (s) passed away during his lifetime, except the mother of all the infallible, hazrat Zahra (s).

However, it is important to note that there are differences in opinion regarding all the daughters, as some have said that they were not the Prophet (s)’s real daughters, but rather they were adopted.
