Ask an Alim

What if I don’t get eternal life after death?

Q:

Assalamualaikum,

I’ve a question about eternal life. The question is what if I don’t get eternal life after getting paradise,Will Allah allow me to die forever?

A:

Wa Alaykumussalam

Thank you for your query.

أُولَٰئِكَ أَصْحَابُ الْجَنَّةِ خَالِدِينَ فِيهَا جَزَاءً بِمَا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ

They shall be the inhabitants of paradise, remaining in it [forever]—a reward for what they used to do.

The life in paradise is eternal as many verses in the Holy Quran clearly speak about this. I will mention the Surah with verses numbers and you can read the translation.

Sura Aale Imran/ verses 15, 136, 198

Sura  Nisaa/ verses 13, 57, 122

Sura Maa’ida/85

Sura An’am/128

Sura Taubah/verses 22, 72, 89, 100

Sura Hood/108

Sura Ibrahim/23

Sura Kahf/108

Sura Taha/76

Sura Furqan/76

Sura Ankaboot/58

Sura Ahqaf /14

Sura Fath/05

Sura Hadeed/12

Sura Mujadalah/22

Sura Taghabun/9

Sura Talaq/11

Sura Baiyinah/8

You can use English translation from www.quran.al-islam.org or www.tanzil.net

We should try to fulfil our Islamic duties by acting upon the commands of Allah(swt) and refraining from Haram to get paradise as a reward.

On a side note, it is good to understand that Allah (az) is the best planner and He has planned out our entire existence in the best possible way and options (both this world and the next). When He has promised an eternal life in Jannah then it is undoubtedly something that a soul would yearn to have for the rest of his existence. Beyond that, Allah knows best.

May Allah(swt) grant you success
