Ask an Alim

What does it mean if someone is struggling to say kalima e shahdah in sleep?

Q:

Salaam
I am abit worried. I woke up in middle of night because my husband was saying the
First kalima in his sleep and he looked like he was struggling when he was saying it. Example when someone is about to die, they say the first kalima while struggling to breath, thats how he was struggling. Why do you think this happened

A:

Al-Salam Alaykum

Speaking in sleep does not mean anything. Sometimes it happens because of the dreams and sometimes it is because of the thoughts we have during the day. Even if someone struggles to say the Shahadatain on his deathbed does not mean anything, and we must repeat it for them. For the ones on deathbed, it may not be possible to repeat by their tongue but they repeat it in their hearts and minds. if they can speak it is also wajib for them to repeat but as most people face difficulties on their death bed if they can not repeat it by their tongue, it is enough for them to repeat it in their hearts.
