Q:

Is it permissible to wear the following make up infront of Na mahram – without having the intention to draw lustful eyes Eyeliner (Kohl) Mascara Light lipstick (Colors that are not bold and are the color of the lips) Concealer / foundation

1. These days there are many lip colors that are light and do not look unnatural. Women put lipsticks and lip balms on their lips to moisturize dry and chapped lips. some of these ointments have light color. colors that are not loud or bold and look like natural lip color. Is this allowed to wear infront of na mahram?

2. Is eyeliner kohl used to line the eyelids allowed? infront of na mahram

3. is mascara on eyelashes allowed? infront of na mahram

Please consider the below stated on Sistani.org “” A woman is allowed to use antimony (kohl) on her eyelashes and wear rings in both hands, provided that it is not intended for drawing lustful attention of men towards herself and that she is confident of not getting into a harãm act. Otherwise, it is obligatory on her to cover [the eyes that have kohl and the hands with rings] even from those who are mahram to her. It is permissible for a woman to go out, wearing perfume even if non-mahram men can smell her perfume; in so doing, she should not aim to arouse or attract such men. It is permissible for a woman to ride in a car by herself with a non-mahram driver as long as she is confident of not getting into a harãm act. “” https://www.sistani.org/english/book/46/2065/ “”

Question: Is it permissible for a woman to go out of her house for some errands perfumed, with the fragrance of her perfume reaching non-mahram men? Answer: She ought not do that. It is not permissible if it tempts a non-mahram man or normally causes him excitement. 2Question: It is normal these days for a woman to put on mascara and make-up, wear rings, necklaces and bracelets for beauty and then go out in front of people in the markets and streets. Answer: This is not permissible for her except for mascara and rings provided that she is safe from falling into forbidden activities and does not intend by it to excite non-mahram men.”” https://www.sistani.org/english/qa/01265/#14990

A:

For your query I called the office of Sayyid Sistani and they said apart from ‘kohl’ no other makeup can be worn infront of Na Mahrams. Unless you want to wear a Niqaab. Makeup like a concealer or self lip color lipstick if it is counted as ‘beautifying one self’ then it’s haram and not allowed.
