Ask an Alim

Using money from my non-believing elder brothers

Q:

Hi,
Salamualaikum
My parents sent me to Canada to live with my athiest brothers for my higher education. However my brothers are not muslims. I don’t have family who believe in Islam to depend on here. I have the understanding that it is not ok for me to seek help from unbelievers , even if they were my father or brother. My elder brothers are often my source of food and money. If I refrain from using their help, I often become struck with extreme poverty. Please tell me what you think of my situation.

Waalaykum al-Salam

Thank you for your query.

We are unsure when you say your brothers are atheists. At times, in layman’s language it can mean two things:

1- Your brothers are really atheists and have denounced Islam completely and believe that there is no God – naudhubillah.

2- They are not practising Muslims.

In both cases, you are allowed to make use of their financial assistance. However, in the first case, they will be Najis. Hence, you will have to make extra efforts for your purification and especially for your salah place.

hope this helps, Do write back to us for further assistance.
