Ask an Alim

Timings of midnight prayers

Q:

Asalam O Alaikum:
My question is that my sibling lives in Sweden and she wants to offer her midnight prayer. She has asked me to ask you (Aalim e Deen) when could it be offered because
Maghrib’s Azaan is called at 9:30 and Fajr’s Azaan at 1:30. At which particular hour should it be offered?

According to the verdict found in the New Edition of the Islamic Laws of Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Sistaani, verdict number 760, one can pray the midnight prayer immediately at the start of the night. The start of the night begins from sunset. So in this case, it can be prayed immediately after the Isha prayer.

Ruling 760. Based on the well-known (mashhūr) juristic opinion, the commencement of the nāfilah of the night is midnight. Although this is more cautious and better, it is not farfetched (baʿīd)(1) that its commencement is the start of night and that its time continues until the time of the morning call to prayer; and it is better that it be performed near the time of the morning call to prayer.

However, in the same verdict it is mentioned that the generally accepted opinion is that it is be prayed after Islamic midnight, which in your example will approximately be around 11:20 pm till the time of the Fajr azan.

It is also mentioned in the same verdict that it is better to perform it closer to the Fajr azan.

Insha allah I hope this helps.
