Ask an Alim

Specific Permanent Tattoos

Q:

I begin in the name of the Lord of the Worlds,

Salaamun Alaykum,

My question is in the context of the permissibility of permanent tattoos, and in detail regarding different items, phrases and verses that can be depicted or written on the body/skin. I understand that there is no objection in having a tattoo, however I wanted to know whether it would be legitimate to have part of a Qur’anic verse due to the laws surrounding ablution (wudhu), impurities (najasat) and so on.

For instance, كُنْ فَيَكُونُ as it appears with the Arabic diacritics (harakat) – would this be acceptable? Or if this is not permissible, if it were to appear as كن فيكون (without the Qur’anic harakat) with the intention of it merely being an Arabic phrase would you believe this to be allowed instead?

Furthermore, what are your opinions regarding tattoos of animals, for instance a lion?

Peace and blessings be upon The Prophet and his Holy Household.

A:

Alaykum Salaam

Quranic verses and other sacred names should not be tattood purely from
the point of view of contact with najasat and other issues causing
disrespect to these phrases.

The presence or absence of the Arabic diacritics (harakaat) on the verses
of the Holy Book makes no difference to its sanctity. So, verses of Quran
with or without the harakaat should not be tattooed.

Kind regards

Abbas Jaffer
