Ask an Alim

Swearing while misunderstanding the situation, will I still be punished?

Q:

I’m really worried about this thing. I just swore on something that I haven’t said, while I actually had said it but I just misunderstood it at that time and I swore on my mother. I didn’t lie or had a fake swear. I just misunderstood the whole situation. My intention wasn’t to lie. And after since then I’ve been continuously asking ALLAH for forgiveness. Will He? Based on the fact that my intentions weren’t of lying.

A:

Salamun Alaykum

Thank you for your query.

By swearing, if you mean you swore by God/mother and wanted to declare your statement to be correct but later you came to know that what you had sworn was wrong, you can repent and ask for forgiveness from Allah(swt) and indeed He will accept it and never repeat again.

But if you meant using offensive words by swearing then that is Haram as we know.

Since your intention, while swearing was dependent on your limited knowledge which was wrong but later you realized and repented, you can tell the person that your intention wasn’t to lie but be careful next time.

The gist of one of Ahadith is to always speak the truth so we don’t have to swear.

May Allah(swt) grant you success
