Ask an Alim

Sources of inner thoughts

Q:

Assalamu alaikkum
I have some problems in life and someone(inside my mind) is giving me hope. He is asking to do good deeds(praying tahajjud and other extra prayers and dua, which i obeyed somewhat mostly. Now i feel solutions are very impossible and life is hardening day by day. When i chose other paths its not going easy. I want to know who gives me this thoughts- allah, shaithan or myself.

A:

Wa Alaikum al-salam

Thanks for your question

In religious sources we have different egos or souls (nafs), which represents different stages or aspects of our soul in this life.

the evil self (Nafs-e-Ammara) or the commanding soul is a state of the soul in which one does not comply with his or her reason, turning to wrongdoings.

the self-accusing soul (Nafs-e-Lawwama) is a psychological state in which one criticizes oneself, or feels guilty, for his or her wrongs.

The soul at peace (nafs al mutmainnah) is the state in which one develops the habit of compliance with reason and arrives at peace.

Maybe that is the soul at peace which asks you to do good deeds. Although pay attention that the right path is not without challenges and issues, the higher we go in our religious life and spirituality, more complex tests will occur but just as Allah swt says in 94:5 “Indeed ease accompanies hardship.” surely there will be ease for you in your life inshallah.

may Allah swt turn our hardships into ease.
