Ask an Alim

Some delusions about existence of Allah and ahlubait ( a.s )

Q:

Assalamo Alykum Molana ! I have a lot of questions that brainstorm in my mind .
1. what are the signs that Allah exists and how do we find them and believe on them ? How do we know that everything about Islam is true?
2. As a Shia and follower of Ahlubait a.s I wanna know how to know that everything told to us about them is correct and how do we find authenticity in it?

3. what are the shirks we commit as a Shia ? Asking for help from Ahlubait ( a.s )? Is that a shirk? Thinking that they listen to us?

4 . how do we find authenticity in what our Alim says about Allah and Ahlubait (a.s )?

5. If everything told to us is true then how do we build strong faith on it?  How do we increase our love?

6. what are the misconceptions that exist in our shias that we believe but are wrong?

7. How to learn about the lives of Ahlubait a.s with authentic references ?

A:

Al-Salam Alaykum Wa Rahmatullah
I repeat your question and try to answer them one by one:
1. what are the signs that Allah exists and how do we find them and believe on them?
There are many books written in this subject and for further research, you can go to them. It is like explaining a very complicated mathematical equation in short. Is it possible to explain e=mc2 in two sentences?! Compare this one mathematical equation to the most sophisticated being. So, I suggest you read more to gain knowledge about God.
However, I give you a short version of the answer to your question:
You can see and understand everything you see around yourself requires a creator. You need a parent to make you even if you never meet them. A building needs an intelligent engineer. A car needs a manufacturer. As more complicated, they are the creator must be more intelligent. Right? So, everything requires its creator. Also, I ask you are the simplest creatures like a fly more complicated or a watch? How is that if we find a watch in a desert, we would think an intelligent being made it but we see thousands and thousands of complicated orders and beings around ourselves and we dare to say they come to existence by accident?! Our Fitrat always answers yes! there must be someone to give such precise order to this universe.

How do we know that everything about Islam is true?
To know everything you must learn and study everything. To find what is true about Islam you must study the books that teach about Islam. A mere doubt is not enough to deny. Doubt is the starting point for research. If you want to know what Islam says you must study Quran and Hadithes by the Prophet of Islam and Ahlulbeyt. If you want to know is Islam is the right religion there are many signs you can refer to: one of which is the miracles of the Quran.  As I mentioned in the first question there are many books about this but I just mention some of them:
– Quran mentions the stages of how an infant is shaped in the womb precisely 12 centuries ago when no one had that knowledge.
– The Quran said that the mountains were moving when the tectonic plates were not discovered yet.
– The Quran mentioned that the Pharoah’s body is saved and preserved so that in the future people learn and it would be a lesson to them. At that time the Pharoh’s body was not discovered. Many centuries later when they found his body, they found out he had drowned and the scientist who discovered this embraced Islam

2. As a Shia and follower of Ahlubait a.s I wanna know how to know that everything told to us about them is correct and how do we find authenticity in it?
By researching history, you can answer this. The merits of Ahlulbayt were so great that even their enemies confessed to them. But if you have something special in mind you can research and find it on your own or ask on this very platform and we will be honored to help.  Asking such a general question would just reach you to a general answer. It is like I ask who said that everything that is narrated in history is right. The answer would be: that you can research systematically and examine its authenticity.

3. what are the shirks we commit as a Shia? Asking help from ahlubait ( a.s ) ? Is that a shirk? Thinking that they listen to us?
We as Shia commit no Shirk. Shirk means putting a being or a thing beside Allah and believing that one can share something with Allah. When someone asks you something (for example to bring him something) is it Shirk? No! it is not. As he does not believe that you do it by yourself but by the power that Allah gave you. When we ask Ahlulbyt we believe because Allah loves them, and gave them powers to pry and intercede for our wishes. This is a very good story pay attention to it carefully They mentioned that Abu Hanifa ate food with Imam al-Sadiq Jaafar bin Muhammad (peace be upon them), and when al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) raised his hand from what he had eaten, he said: Praise be to God, Lord of the worlds. Oh God, this is from you and from Your Messenger (may God bless him and his family). Abu Hanifa said: O Abu Abdullah, have you made a partner with God? And he said to him: Woe to you, for God Almighty says in His book: (And they did not resent anything except that God and His Messenger enriched them of His bounty)and He says in another place: (And if they were satisfied with what God and His Messenger have given them and said that God is sufficient for us, God will give us of His bounty and His Messenger)Abu Hanifa said: By God, it is as if I had never read them from the Book of God nor heard them except at this time! Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him) said: Yes, I have read them and heard them, but God Most High revealed about you and your likenesses: (Or are there locks on their hearts) and he said: (No, rather what they used to earn resonated on their hearts)
So, Even Quran says Allah give power to the prophet and also to Ahlulbayt and we ask them from the power that Allah gave them.
Also, thinking that they are listening to us is not Shirk. If it is Shirk how do all Muslims say Salam at the end of their prayer to Prophet of Islam?! Also, Quran says every one who belive that people in their grave does not hear is Kafir or Infidels ﴿یا أَیهَا الَّذِینَ آمَنُوا لا تَتَوَلَّوْا قَوْماً غَضِبَ الله عَلَیهِمْ قَدْ یئِسُوا مِنَ الآْخِرَةِ کما یئِسَ الْکفَّارُ مِنْ أَصْحابِ الْقُبُورِ﴾ (الممتحنة: ۱۳) “O you who have believed, do not befriend a people upon whom God has become angry. They have despaired of the Hereafter as the unbeliever’s despair of the dwellers of the graves.” (Al-Mumtahanah: 13)

4. how do we find authenticity in what our Alim says about Allah and Ahlubait (a.s )?
The answer to this question is the same. You must check it with the Quran history books and Hadith books. But I ask you how you can be sure about what your doctors say? How about  an engineer or mechanic? What do you think of your handyman? Mere doubt is not a problem but we as human beings trust those who have a talent or studied a subject or worked in the field. Alims are also like doctors, mechanics, handymen, they are specialists. The only difference is that they studied subjects about Islam. However, as you go to a doctor who has the degree and he has the certificate for practising medical subjects, you must find a trustworthy Alim; not anyone who calls himself an Alim.

5. If everything told to us is true then how do we build strong faith in it?  How do we increase our love?
By asking precise questions. If a doubt comes to you, Ask An Alim. Literally and figuratively. As Imam Hasan Askari said Question is the key to knowledge. There is no shame and no problem for asking questions. But remember every question needs its premises. Asking complicated questions needs proper studies and it would have greater rewards. I go back to the example I said first: if someone as 2+2? The answer is easy 4! It is a proper and good mathematical question but the reward is good just for counting eggs. But if someone asks what is E=MC2? The answer needs many years of study but the result would help to build most sophisticated instruments. Both of them are mathematical questions. Both have answers. Both are useful. But they have different sophisticated levels and results. The question about religion also is the same. If you want great answers you must be patient to learn the answers.
Learning is one of the ways to increase the love. The other way is to follow what you have learnt. Showing love to your fellow brethren. By practising your love, it would increase.

6. what are the misconceptions that exist in our shias that we believe but are wrong?
The misconceptions in communities is different to the misconceptions in our belief system. A divine belief system will not (and should not have) any issues and errors, because guidance is dependant on it.  some misconceptions to exist but it is related to either personal or communal error For example, I heard some Shia say salam to Imam Hussein in their prayers. It is wrong and if someone knows and does it his prayer would be Batil. Or believing that Shia would go to heaven no matter what sin they commit. It is not right. Shia would be judged on the day of judgment and if they sin, Allah would hold them responsible.
However, you can see, I can not name all the misconceptions and it is not pervasive in all Shia.

7. How to learn about the lives of Ahlubait a.s with authentic references?
Two simple books about the life of Ahlulbyt which are very good and reliable:
Montahal Amal by Sheikh Abbas Qummi translated to English as The Pinnacle of Hopes
Sirre Pishwayan by Mahdi Pishwayee
However, remember these two books are very simple and they are very brief. There are books by scholars which are in detail and advance and they are used for deep and scholarly research such as:
الصحیح من سیرة النبی الاعظم
سیرة المرتضی من سیرة المرتضی
الحیاة السیاسیة للإمام الجواد (ع)؛
الحیاة السیاسیة للإمام الحسن (ع)؛
الحیاة السیاسة للإمام الرضا (ع) all by Seyed Jafar Murtaza Amoly
الصحیح من سیرة امام الحسن ع
موسوعه سیرة اهل البیتby Baqir Sharif Al-Qarshi
There are also many other books but these are some of the most important ones written currently and they are very useful and deeply researched.

In the end, I understood from your questions that you are exposed to a lot of questions and doubts from Wahabism and atheists. Quran tells us when you do not have the strength to answer those who are away from the right path you must not sit with them, 68 And if you see those who play with Our signs, turn away from them until they delve into another discourse. If Satan makes you forget, just After you remember do not sit with the wrongdoing people Surah Al-Anam: 68.
Having doubt is not a problem but if you do not have time to find the right answer you should not poison your mind. How we are careful about the hygiene of our body we should take care of the hygiene of our mind. Imam Hassan said I wonder about those who think about the food of their body, but do not pay attention to the food of the soul, they keep harmful food away from their stomachs, but they fill the heart with deadly poisons.
Be careful and if you have questions try to eradicate your doubts by learning either by reading, studying, asking questions or by speaking to Alim.
Best regards!
