Covering of Women’s Feet during Prayers

Q:

Should a woman cover her legs during prayers (Salaah) or not?

A:

Detailed answer in three points:

  1. Covering the feet (till the first part of the leg) is not a condition for the prayer to be valid. So the woman does not have to cover them entirely (back and soles of the feet). (see source N°1).
  2. But she cannot show her feet in front of a na-mehram anytime, during prayer or not, so if she knows that a na-mahram can see her during her prayers, she has to cover her feet (see source N°2)
  3. Also if a woman does not cover her feet during the prayer knowing that a na-mahram can see her, is her prayer valid ? Answer : yes her prayer is valid. (see source N°3)

Source N°1: it is not necessary for a woman to cover her feet during prayer

Source N°2: It is obligatory for a woman to cover her feet in front of a na-mahram anytime

Source N°3: Prayer is not invalid if a woman does not cover her feet in front of a na-mahram during prayer (Question asked to www.sistani.org).
