Ask an Alim

should Only Belief in Allah or Oneself

Q:

Should one believe only in Allah and not believe in oneself? OR Should one believe in Allah and also believe in oneself?

A:

Bismillah

Salaamun Alaykum

Thank you for your question. The question is a bit confusing but I will try and answer what I have understood form it. Firstly, if what is meant by belief in oneself is the belief in ones own existence, then of course, one should believe in both the existence of oneself (which is self-evident through presential knowledge) and in the existence of Allah (which can be determined through rational proofs and other means). If what is meant by the question is that should one prefer Allah’s command over ones own desire, then again, this is correct since humans can not always judge what is best for them. Allah, being our creator and nourisher, is aware of all things including what is beneficial for us and what is harmful and is best suited to tell us what to do and what to avoid.

I hope this has answered your question.
Fi Amanillah,
SM.
