Ask an Alim

Should I pray to Allah for the person who is engaged

Q:

Asalam alaikum, I like this guy. He’s my mums nephew. We’ve never talked privately face to face, he visits us but I’ve only ever spoken to him when he’s visiting us and when I do my mum or sisters always there. Everytime I look at him I can see my future with him but my problem is that he is already engaged and I’ve made dua but I’m still certain he’s the one. Should I leave it or keep trying to make dua to Allah swt and ask for him.

A:

Salaamun alaykum.
Thank you for your question.
It is very natural for human beings to like or be attracted to another person but that does not mean it is always permissible to do so. Allah has taught us what is wrong and right. So we have to learn to control our feelings as well. When we have this natural instinct where we can get attracted to someone, Allah has also given us the willpower and the free will to control our feelings and our desires where we are not supposed to.
In your case i would like to ask you a question, if you were engaged and some other girl liked your fiancee and would want to marry him, how would you feel? Keeping that in mind you should try and forget him and pray to Allah for his happiness and help you to forget him and grant you a better person whom you can spend your life with gracefully inshaAllah.
