Ask an Alim

Should i attend a wedding in Muharram ?

Q:

So basically i have my friend wedding on the 12th of Muharram. He is a muslim sunni. I have told that keep in mind that these days are very heavy and important days in islam. He said that his in laws organized the wedding he cannot change the dates. So he invited me and my wife with love. Now me as a shia I’m very confused should i attend the wedding. My heart says that don’t go because its moharram and on the other hand my heart also say’s that its after the 10th moharram and i know what are my intentions, you are not going to enjoy but going because he is your friend. What should i do. Is it a sin to go in that condition ? I also read your topic on MARRIAGE IN MOHARRAM. But If i go to the wedding i want to be clear in my mind thats why i reached you out.

Kind regards. JazakaAllah.

We appreciate you being concerned about your relationship with God and religious responsibilities.

Attending marriage ceremony in the mentioned case without the intention of celebrating is not prohibited.

Regards.
