Ask an Alim

Salatul Ayaat

Q:

Salamun Alaykum,

As per the ruling for Ayatullah Sistani in the English version of Islamic Laws (#1517), we are permitted to recite Sura al-Ikhlas when reciting Salatul Ayaat using the shorter method.

The following information was released by the World Federation in 2009:
http://www2.world-federation.org/IslamicEducation/Articles/Namaz_e_Ayaat_Important_Clarification.htm

Please clarify whether the information is still accurate or have there been any updates/changes.

Jazakallah!

A:
As salaam alaikum,
After looking up Arabic version of Minhaj and Almasail Almuntakhabah
online at
www.sistani.org. This is what I found.

1. Both texts are very clear that based on obligatory precaution, one
cannot split a surah in a manner that one recites only Bismillah before the first rukuh.
( masala 708 minhaj vol. 1, masala 272, and 459 Almasail Almuntakhabah)

2. However, one can still use surah ikhlas in salat ul ayat as follows. (Ref. masla 708 minhaj vol. 1)
For example, he may say: Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim , Qul huwallahu Ahad,
and then
perform first Ruku.
He should then stand up and say, Allahus Samad, and perform the second Ruku.
Thereafter he should stand up again and say, Lam yalid walam yulad, and perform the third Ruku.
Then he should stand up again and say, Walam yakullahu Kufuwan ahad, and then perform the fourth rukuh,
Then he should stand up and recite Surah Fatihah and all of surah ikhlas before going for fifth rukuh.

He can the repeat the same for the second rakat.

Hope it helps.
With prayers,
Aqib Jaffry
