Ask an Alim

Is it permissible to sell haram things received as gifts and donate the money to needy

Q:

Sir
One of my colleague gifted me a bottle of costly whiskey.

I don’t drink it and consider it haram, how ever since it’s valueable can I sell it and give the money to poor?

A:

Wa Alaykum al-Salam

Thank you for your question. Following is reply from the site of Ayatullah al-Udhma Sayyid Sistany (May Allah keep him safe.)

5Question: Can a Muslim buy or sell wine or pork to non-Muslims? What is the fatwa on the income one gets by doing such a job?
Answer: It is not permissible to sell these things and the income is not halal.

Hence, you must discard this. Also accepting this in the first place, is problematic.
