Reciting Surah Yasin next to parent’s grave

Q:

Asalam Alaykum,
I submitted a question for clarification on 2/19/2020. Would it be possible to get an advise on that by tomorrow that’ll be great and I’ll really appreciate it, as the question now is time sensitive. I’m pasting the question here again

Brother Assalam-o-Alaikum,I need your humble advice on one issuethat is bothering me a lot. I googled it to find the perfect answer but stillunclear and confused. The question isWhen I visit the grave of my fatherbesides praying Dua E Maghfirat can I also recite some ayats of Quran likeSuarah Yasin, Surah Mulk and others.? To my very limited knowledge I thing ifonly a child recite Quranic ayats on behalf of deceased parents that goes in theiraccount as Sadaqah Jariyah. I’m debating this on behalf of hadidh by Nabi PakṢallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam that when a person dies his deeds come to an endexcept for three: Sadaqah Jariyah (a continuous charity), or knowledge fromwhich benefit is gained, or a righteous child who prays for him’. (Muslim)So if I make my an argument based onthe third point and recite ayaths of Quran and ask ALLAH to accept it asSadaqah Jariyah and give all credit of recitation to my father even if I dothis act next to his grave? Will that be permissible? Your clarification and guidance in thisregard will be much appreciated.ShukryaSyed Rayees

Thank you for your question. Sadaqa jariya is that charity that has a lasting effect due to its long term effect in this world. So for example, planting a tree which gives fruit to the inhabitants of a certain area yearly is a type of sadaqa jariya. Or contributing to the building of a mosque, teaching somebody to read Qur’an or any other act that has a lasting effect. These deeds when donated to somebody who has passed away benefits them. Other deeds which do not have a lasting effect in this world, such as the private recitation of Qur’an (whether at their graveside or not), or prayer, or supplication are not usually categorised as sadaqa jariya, however, they are also beneficial to the deceased when the blessings for such actions are dedicated to them.

May you always be successful
