Ask an Alim

Role of khalifa as per Shia.

Q:

Allah knows the future, then Why did he give such big ranks to Umar, Abubakar and Usman.  Allah knew that they will hurt Rasool and his family then why were they given such high ranks? It makes difficult for Sunni’s to understand, Why we hate them. Sunni’s think that If Allah (swt) gave them such big ranks then they can’t be wrong.

A:

Salamun Alaykum

Thank you for your query.

You mentioned that Allah(swt) gave the high status to the Sunni Caliphs. How can we say that Allah gave them high ranks? Whereas, we know that they selected themselves in Saqifa?!!

We have seen and understood that it has been proved that the opinion of the Prophet was above the views of everyone, even the view of the majority and that it was the sure view of the Prophet (S) that he selected ‘Ali (a.s.) to be his successor on the day of Ghadir and informed the people of his decision. So, consultations aimed at appointing a successor after the Prophet (S) are clearly against the wish of Allah and His Prophet, and are completely useless; however, abandoning this reality, we now want to ask whether after the Prophet (S) consultative meetings were held, and if so, whether the majority opinion was upheld.

Imam Ali was appointed as a successor by Prophet Muhammad(s.a.w.w) by command of Allah(swt). The event of Ghadir Khum and the famous hadith related to it is considered authentic in the Sunni sources as well. For detail, please read:

Did the Prophet (s) Appoint a Successor? www.al-islam.org/articles/beliefs-did-prophet-s-appoint-successor

Therefore, it is clearly understood that Imamat is from Allah(swt) and the caliphate was forcibly brought by them.

May Allah(swt) keep us on the right path.
