Removing Hijab

Q:

Assalamu Alaikum, I’m a 36 year old women who chose to wear hijab for about 6 years now. I had severe asthma prior to wearing hijab and for the past two months have been dealing with it again. I was given steroid medications to suppress the symptoms with it but my recent symptoms are more representative of panic or anxiety attacks. It’s a spiral effect which begins with extreme discomfort and a choking feeling of having the hijab on my head and around my neck and ends with days of chest pain, fatigue and discomfort . For over two months now I avoid going out or putting myself in social settings requiring I have the hijab on. I’m against medicating myself through this issue and don’t know how much longer I can deal with it. When I’m at home and haven’t had an anxiety episode, I feel fine. I don’t want to start disliking something I once really loved because of how it’s making me feel. What is the religious verdict in such a situation?

Waalykum salam

Sorry to hear about your situation.
Hijab should not make you feel chocked and suffocated. Keep your hijab simple with no face covering at all (Like Burqa). It should simply cover your hair and neck gently. Nothing tight or uncomfortable.
Type of hijab (like the in style shawl wrapped around a few times) also matters. Make sure you buy extra  light cotton hijabs and simply put it around you with a little room when tightening or fastening it.
May Allah ease your issue and send tons of blessings you way.
Best wishes,
