Obligatory Sujood in Menstruation

Q:

Assalamu Alaikum,

While in classes for learning Qur’an, is it allowable for a woman, during menstruation, to read/recite the 4 surahs with obligatory sujood (this is with a Sunni teacher with whom sujood is not mandatory)?

This to not make this personal issue obvious and also not to call attention to the fact that I am Shia when doing so might cause ill feelings.

Jazakum Allahu Khairun.

A:

Wa alaykum salam warahmatullah,

Reciting /reading any of the 4 verses for which sajda is obligatory is prohibited in the state of menstruation. So is the touching the writing of the Quran.

As per majority of sunni fiqh the lady in menstruation is not allowed to touch verses of Quran or recite it apart from the verses of dua or suras such as mawidhatayn. Therefore you can inform the Quran teacher of your inability to recite the quran verses in practising your fiqh.

Wa ma tawfiqi ila billah

With salams and duas,

Fazle Abbas
