Reciting Astaghfirullah rabbi wa atubu ilaih in sujood.

Q:

I have been reciting astaghfirullah rabbi wa atubu ilaih in both sujood of every rikat, please let me know if I am  doing any mistake or is it ok to do it this way or only in the first sajda. Please correct me so that I can guide my daughter better. Thanks

A:

Salamun Alaykum

Thank you for your query.

According to the Shia fiqh, the person should recite either (سُبْحَانَ اللهِ  )  3 times or once (سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْأَعْلَىٰ وَ بِحَمْدِهِ) in Salat.

According to Ayatullah al-Udhma Sayyid Ali Sistany:

Ruling 1035. When one has the option to, it is better that in sajdah he says:

subاānal lāh  –  سُبْحَانَ اللهِ  ×3

or:

subاāna rabbiyal aʿlā wa bihamdih   –  سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْأَعْلَىٰ وَ بِحَمْدِهِ   ×1

and these words must be said consecutively and in correct Arabic. Saying any dhikr suffices, but based on obligatory precaution it must be of this length. And it is recommended that one says subhāna rabbiyal aʿlā wa bihamdih three, five, seven, or even more times.

So according to Ayatullah Sistany, one must either recite سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْأَعْلَىٰ وَ بِحَمْدِهِ once or سُبْحَانَ اللهِ three times or on obligatory precaution(Ehtiyate Wajib) he should recite الحمد لله three times, or الله اکبر three times and reciting other dhikr such as Istighfar, Salawat, Dua for oneself or others is not sufficient to recite in Sajdah. According to him just استغفرالله is not sufficient.

If one wasn’t aware and had been reciting the whole istighfar(استغفرالله ربی و اتوب الیه) in Sajdah and was satisfied for the Salat to be correct, then his previous Salat are correct.

May Allah(swt) grant you success

Wassalam,
