Ask an Alim

Queries about traditional beliefs.

Q:

Assalamu alikum maulana.

I have a few questions to ask which have made my life very miserable and depressed.

I asked someone else to but I didn’t get a satisfactory and to the point answer and he was more emphasizing on having BLIND FAITH in god which I cant. These questions are disturbing me so much that I have stopped praying from about 2 3 days.

1) Why do we slit a goats neck a little and let it agonize in pain? Just so that all the blood drains out from its body? If it cant speak isn’t it a little bit cruel to do that?

2) Will terrorists be sent to hell? If yes then why? They didn’t get a liberal environment like us. If they are taught that killing is good and that is their only belief then why will they be sent to hell? If no then why? Isn’t it injustice to let them give paradise so easily and here we are struggling with being good and praying to God and handling family?

Now I am sorry to ask the below questions but they seem to be important to me.

3) If God gave us desire to have sex then why it is haram to have sex if we can’t control? How God thinks that we will ignore our strong sex desire (which God himself gave to us) and not have sex?

4) I didn’t ask God to send me on earth. I didn’t ask my parents to have sex and give birth to me. Then why i have to suffer this world? I didn’t ask for this world. Now when i am i this world, if i do wrong I will be sent to hell. Why? I didn’t ask god to send me here then why he sends us to hell for eternity?

Thank you for reading. And plz maulana plz don’t ask me to have blind faith. And plz give to the point answer.

Waiting for your reply.
Thank you for your time.

A:

Wa Alaykumussalam

Thank you for your queries

All the Islamic rulings below will be according to Ayatullah al-Udhma Sayyid Ali Sistany with the link.

Answer 1:

There are etiquette for everything. Same way the etiquette for slaughtering and in order to slaughter in the Halal way there is the special method which should be taken care of, otherwise the goat will be Haram to eat.

One of the conditions of slaughtering the animal in an Islamic way is:

A normal amount of blood must drain out of the animal’s body. Therefore, if its blood congeals in its veins and does not drain out, or, if the amount of blood that drains out is relatively little for an animal of its type, the animal is not lawful to eat. However, if the amount of blood that drains out is relatively little due to the animal having bled before it was slaughtered, there is no problem;

Question: What are the conditions for slaughtering of an animal?

It is necessary that the blood should flow in normal quantity from the slaughtered animal. If someone blocks the vein, not allowing blood to flow out, or if the bleeding is less than normal, that animal will not be halal. But if the blood which flows is less because the animal bled profusely before the slaughter, there is no objection.

https://www.sistani.org/english/qa/01301/

There are 7 conditions mentioned on the above link and I have copied only one of them related to your question.

Why do we say Bismillah before slaughtering? What if you do not say Bismillah while slaughtering? Wouldn’t that be haraam to eat? Even if it is said in the Holy Quran(Baqarah/173) that the animal which has not been slaughtered by saying the name of Allah, is considered to be haraam. Would we accept it or still question why?

He has only forbidden you what dies of itself, and blood, and flesh of swine, and that over which any other (name) than (that of) Allah has been invoked; but whoever is driven to necessity, not desiring, nor exceeding the limit, no sin shall be upon him; surely Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.(Baqarah/173)

The conventional method used to slaughter the animal involves cutting the large arteries in the neck along with the esophagus and trachea with one swipe of a non-serrated blade. Care must be taken that the nervous system is not damaged, as this may cause the animal to die before exsanguination has taken place. During the swipe of the blade, the head must not be decapitated. While blood is draining, the animal is not handled until it has died.

There are many things for which there will be scientific proofs to prove it but does it mean if you don’t have the scientific proof, the thing shouldn’t be wajib or haraam by Allah? Does God know more or the scientists? These scientists who discover and invent many things and then come to a conclusion but on the other hand you see Allah (swt) told us many things in Qur’an which was sent more than 1400 years ago. So, the thing which is not proven but presented by Islam, will you declare Islam to be backward and without sense or Is it the human being who lacks the knowledge and hasn’t reached the reality of the things made compulsory on the human being by God?? Not knowing the philosophy of Wajibaat will not harm the human being.

Answer 2:

Terrorists who act according to their own freewill and kill the innocent people will and must go to Hell.

There is a discussion called “Predestination and free-will”. I will recommend you to read about it in detail on: https://www.al-islam.org/justice-god-naser-makarem-shirazi/issue-predestination-and-free-will

We believe that Allah(swt) has given the free will to all of us and it is we who can decide what we want to do.

The Holy Qur’an states this issue directly and proves the free will of human beings and there are hundreds of verses which talk about free will.

  • All of the verses which relate to commanding virtue and preventing vice are all proof of the free will of human beings because if a person was destined to do so, commanding them to do so would make no sense.
  • All of the verses which speak of blame and reproach against the evil doers and praise for the good doers are proof of free will because if one was destined to do whatever one did, blame or praise would make no sense.
  • All of the verses which speak about the questioning on the Day of Judgement and the Judgement in that Court and then the rewards and punishments and heaven and hell are proof of free will because if one was to assume that everything was predestined then questioning, judging, rewards and punishments would all be oppressive.

Some of the questions to ask ourselves to get the answer of this question:

  1. According to your inquiry it seems that Allah(swt) shouldn’t have created the Hell and He being so merciful should forgive everyone and send all to Paradise. Since Allah had created Hell which is clearly proven from various verses of the Holy Qur’an, does it mean Allah created the Hell in vain??
  2. Why do so many students fail in this world even though paying high fees for schools/universities? What if they get better opportunity wouldn’t they do better? If Yes, then why they are declared fail in their exams?
  3. People like Saddam and others who killed thousands of innocent people. Do you think they should also go to paradise? Maybe these people felt that killing is a good thing?!
If you want to do justice for Saddam. How would you do justice for one person he has killed? By killing the killer once? Now for 250,000 iraqi people he had killed how would do you do justice with these 250,000 who died?? Of course we need a higher court which is in the Hereafter where Allah is the Judge and the killer will be the victim and hence according to sins he would be punished.
  4. If terrorists are not sent to hell then do you think this is justice to the innocent people who have been dying in this world?
  5. If terrorist is a so called Muslim(just by name), doesn’t he know about the existence of Hell which is clearly proven in the Holy Qur’an?
  6. Is there any religion amongst the main religions sent by Allah(swt) who proclaim killing others to be a good act? Does our intellect say killing others is a good act? We would negate for these answers because this is something which an intellectual person can understand. Even the non Muslims will accept killing to be bad and wouldn’t call this logical.

Answer 3:

Allah(swt) gave the humans desire to have pleasure and also showed the best way to use this the faculty of Shahwat(desire/pleasure). And the best way is to get married. It is us, who have made it difficult whereas Allah(swt) showed us the best way to get married and live a prosperous life.

Again, there is the free will due to which we perform everything. God also bestowed us with the power of controlling over sins. Had there not been the controlling power like car brakes, how would an individual have refrained himself for the bad things. Would you buy a car without the brakes or you would prefer one with the brakes?

God gave us hunger and also the desire to fulfill this hunger. Do we go and eat Haram to fulfill this desire or would we go and eat Halaal?

If Allah had put the desire of pleasure in us and had made everything Haram to use the power then we could say that this is not justice? Whereas, Allah swt beside putting the desire, provided the correct way to use the desires.

Answer 4:

This is a question which arises due to satan’s inclination and deviation. We do not have the choice to be born or not. There was no “I” before I was created, to say that why was I created. So there is no question in saying that “I” did not want to come to this world.

Allah (swt) did not create us to sin and hence go to Hell. He had never said it. Rather he says in Surah Dhariyat/56:

وَمَا خَلَقْتُ الْجِنَّ وَالْإِنْسَ إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُونِ

I did not create the jinn and the humans except that they may worship Me.

Allah created so all can obey Him and go to Paradise.

Did Allah create Satan as Satan? No, He created Satan as a living being, it was satan who with his free will chose that path and become satan who will be sent to Hell.

What if there was someone else created instead of you and had asked the same question? There is no choice of coming or not, and when to come. But there is a choice once we are created as we all have free will so we can act according to what Prophet(s.a.w.w.w) and the Ahlul Bayt (sa) taught us to have a successful life and go to Paradise.

Regarding your question “Why Allah(swt) will send to hell for eternity?”

If someone hits other’s eye badly or let’s say someone strikes the needle in other’s eyes, will that person lose his sight forever, for eternity or would that effect remain for a while and the injured person would get his sight back? Of course you would say this injured person will not get his sight again after the great injury.

Allah states in Surah Mulk/2:

الَّذِي خَلَقَ الْمَوْتَ وَالْحَيَاةَ لِيَبْلُوَكُمْ أَيُّكُمْ أَحْسَنُ عَمَلًا ۚ وَهُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الْغَفُورُ

He, who created death and life that He may test you [to see] which of you is best in conduct. And He is the All-mighty, the All-forgiving.

Therefore we understand that Allah did not create us to go to hell, rather he likes all to go to Paradise. Even if all perform good deeds and go to paradise Allah will not lose anything.
