Ask an Alim

Praying with shoes.

Q:

One of My friend prays with his Nike shoes which he is not sure with which animal leather they are  made, Is it ok for him to pray with those shoes.?

A:

Salamun Alaykum

Thank you for your query.

According to Shias, one cannot perform Salat with the shoes on. He has to take it off to pray as one of the seven wajib things to be touched while Sajda is to touch the toes of both feet on the ground. And this wajib cannot be performed unless shoes are taken off.

According to Ahlus Sunnah:

…in our opinion, praying while wearing shoes, slippers or others is valid and follows the syarak instruction to differ from the Jews. However, one must first ensure that the shoes and slippers worn are clean and pure from najis. The same applies to a place or space that one wishes to pray at, it must be clean from any najis for it is included as the valid condition of prayer which is the body, clothing and place of prayer must be clean from any najis.

..Based on this, it is better not to pray in mosques while wearing shoes. The exception is only for individuals who find it difficult to take off their shoes for a legitimate reason. In this case, it is permissible for them to pray in their shoes after making sure that they are clean and that they will not annoy other worshippers.

..it is permissible under all circumstances provided the toes touch the ground whilst in sajdā and there are no impurities on the shoes.

Hence we conclude even if the Sunni brothers have allowed people to pray with shoes on, they must avoid praying in shoes in the mosques as this will create more problems and discomfort than making the Salah easier for a single person. One should take off his shoes as it is a sign of humbleness

May Allah(swt) grant you success
