Praying for Disbelievers

Q:

Dear Scholar,

i want to clear my understanding on Certain issues i read in the Holy Quran. so i will put my question so that i can be explained.

19:47 [Abraham] said, “Peace will be upon you. I will ask forgiveness for you of my Lord. Indeed, He is ever gracious to me.

9:113 : It is not (fit) for the Prophet and those who believe that they should ask forgiveness for the polytheists, even though they should be near relatives, after it has become clear to them that they are inmates of the flaming fire.

above are the 2 verse in one of the verse Prophet Abraham PUBH is praying for forgiveness for his disbelieving Uncle. while in the other verse it is mentioned that it is not proper for a prophet and Muslims to ask forgiveness for people who disbelieved.

Please help me understand.

A:

Salaam Alaykum.

Verse 113 of  Surah Tawbah denotes that the Prophet (S) and the true believers have not to pray for the polytheists, even though they are from their relatives. This verse answers a dubious thing as to why Abraham (as) gave his uncle a promise of asking for forgiveness, saying“…I will pray to my Lord forgive you…” (Surah Maryam, No. 19, verse 47).
The above mentioned verse indicates that Abraham’s promise was with the hope that he might be guided, but when he saw that his uncle was in the state of disbelief, Abraham left asking forgiveness for him. This can be seen in verse 114 of Surah Tawbah: “And Abraham’s seeking forgiveness for his father was only because of a promise he had made to him. So when it became clear to him that he was an enemy of Allah, he declared himself quit of him. Verily Abraham was tenderhearted and forbearing.”

However, you should pray for their guidance. Moreover, all sort of sile rahim etc is to be done and practised.
