Ask an Alim

Patience

Q:

Asaalam o Alaikum. I have lost my father quite suddenly in a car accident. It has been almost nine months but I cannot overcome his departure. I try to offer the prayer five times a day and pray for him alot but is there any other way, so that I could stop thinking of the incident or any Dua. Kindly answer me. Thankyou

A:

Salaamun Alaykum

Thank you for your question. Please accept my condolences on the passing away of your father. Losing a loved one is always a difficult time and I pray Allah (SWT) rewards you for your patience.

One of the first things we must remember at times like these is that death is not the end, rather, believers will be united with their loved ones in paradise. In fact, even before that in the intermediary world of barzakh. This world is a temporary abode and leaving it is inevitable – a necessary part of ones journey towards perfection.
Secondly, when we are experiencing pain, such as losing a family member, we should try and remember the trials and tribulations the prophets and the Ahlul Bayt (AS) endured, especially the tragedy of Karbala. We can take many lessons from their patience and reliance on Allah (SWT).
Thirdly, try to remember that this world is a “prison for the believer”. Your father, being a faithful believer, is in a better place receiving the mercy of Allah (SWT). Your prayers, duas and good deeds done in his name will undoubtedly reach him and will be means of comfort and sustenance for him.
Lastly, it is important to prepare ourselves for this journey to the other world and to ensure that we are well equipped for it. Striving to better ourselves, getting closer to Allah (SWT) and the Ahlul Bayt (AS) will surely ease your pain and will lead us to be reunited with our loved ones in the hereafter, Insha Allah.

Fi Amanillah,
SM.
