Ask an Alim

not praying since 3 weeks due to periods

Q:

This is a little personal. I have been having my period for about 3 weeks now, and although it is unusual i have been waiting for it to end and it still has not ended. My mother wants me to start reading namaz again. She says after 8 days it is too long and it is a sickness, and that i should just start praying again. However i feel uncomfortable praying when i am not clean. Should i wait until i can become clean again or is it okay to start praying? I have already gone 3 weeks without praying.

A:
Salaam Alaykum,
446. The period of Hayz is not less than 3 days and not more than 10 days and if the period during which blood is discharged falls short of 3 days even by a small measure of time, that blood will not be considered as Hayz.
Kinds of blood seen by women
The blood seen after 10 days is considered istehadha.
In your case because we dont have all the details about your cycle,i suggest you refer to this link: Irregular blood discharge (istiḥāḍah)
Read all the rules regarding haiz and istehaza.
