Ask an Alim

Newborn Head shaving with an electric trimmer be sufficient or is there anything to suggest the hair must be totally removed i.e. with a razor blade?

Q:

Salam Alaykum,
I understand it is recommended to shave the head of a newborn child at 7 days. Would shaving this with an electric trimmer be sufficient or is there anything to suggest the hair must be totally removed i.e. with a razor blade?

Wa Alaykumussalam

Thank you for your question

It is Mustahab to shave the head and shortening with the trimme doesn’t suffice to fulfill the Mustahab act.

Mustahab (مستحبّ) It is an Islamic term referring to recommended, favoured or virtuous actions. If we perform Mustahab we get the reward for it and if we don’t perform we don’t get punishment for that as it is not considered wajib.

Since, shaving the head of a new born on the seventh day is Mustahab, and if one doesn’t do so. Then he does not get punished for not doing so

Shaving the baby’s head: It is mustahabb to shave the baby’s head on the seventh day after its birth and give its weight’s worth of gold or silver in charity. Weighing the hair can be done using the precise scales used in jewelry stores that are used for weighing gold and silver. You can ask how much money that much gold equals. Of course, all of this is mustahabb and doesn’t mean you have to do it and if you choose not to, it doesn’t mean you have sinned.
