Q:

Assalam o alikum

I am in great trouble need help and guidance am grieved and upset as my pet cat peed on prayer mat and some drops fell on qur’anic surahs that are placed near prayer mat ,I didn’t see this myself but when I stood up , I felt a very bad smell and then realized what happened. I washed the prayer mat and cleaned the surah books with wet  tissues but I’m not satisfied and want to know what to do ? Is there any kafara to pay and what to do with surah books ( it contains surah Yasin, surah Kahf ,Manzil dua and other daily routine duas).

Please help me out and guide me.

JazakAllah khair.

Wa Alaykumussalam

Thank you for your query.

It is Haraam to make the Holy Qur’an or its wordings najis. If it becomes najis, it is wajib to immediately wash and make it Paak.

If you are not certain that your cat peed on the Qur’an or not, then you can take it as it did not pee and you do not need to wash it. But if you are certain and 100% sure that it had peed on the Qur’an, then you must wash the page or the cover it had peed on.

The Najasat doesn’t go away by cleaning with wet tissues, rather the wet tissue makes your hands also najis because the wetness transfers najasat if your hands, clothes are directly or indirectly in contact with the najasat while in the state of wetness. So, wet tissues will never make the impure object pure unless you wash the prayer mat according to the Shar’iah laws. You can wash the prayer mat directly under the tap water by also rinsing.

Purifying an impure object according to Ayatullah al-Udhma Sayyid Ali Sistany:

Ruling 153. If an impure object is immersed once in kurr or flowing water such that water reaches all its impure areas, it becomes pure. In the case of a rug, clothing, or a similar thing, it is not necessary to squeeze or wring it or to stamp on it. And in case a person’s body or clothing becomes impure with urine, then based on obligatory precaution, it is necessary to wash it twice with kurr water or the like; however, if flowing water is used, it becomes pure by washing it once.

Please read more rulings regarding purifying

Regarding the Kaffarah, you do not have to pay any Kaffarah for it as you did not intentionally made it najis. You don’t need to get upset. Please learn the way of how to make the najis things paak to have an easier and a spiritual life. And try to keep the cat away while praying to avoid such things to happen again. If the writing of the booklet vanishes or disappears, then you can use the other book of Surahs and Duas.

May Allah(swt) grant you success.
