Ask an Alim

My Husband has a really bad habit of staring at other women.

Q:

My Husband has a really bad habit of staring other women. Whenever we are outside he is always staring at some other women. Sometimes even when I am talking to him he is busy looking other people. Sometimes he doesn’t even know what I am saying because he is not giving much attention and busy staring other people. This makes me really upset and unwanted.
I have talked to him regarding this matter but he always denies it. But this makes me really upset and it has created a distance/space between us. My love for him is fading because he doesn’t care about me. What can I do to make my husband stop this habit? How can I communicate with him regarding this matter? Is this acceptable in Islam?

A:

Salamun alaykum
Thank you for your question.
Staring at na mahram is not allowed in Islam.

From what I have understood, I think your husband is staring at women out of habit and has no bad intentions.

I’m not trying to justify his action but most human beings have habits that are unacceptable and need to be corrected.

Change of habit happens gradually, therefore you will have to be patient.

Speak to him about your feelings but do not nag him.

As a wife, you can help him by showing him love and affection and fulfilling his physical needs.

You may also want to adopt gradual steps on pulling his attention towards his gaze by asking him questions that will divert his attention to his gaze. mind you, this should be done in a very mild and polite tone so that this doesn’t create a rift between you. Your intention is to help him and not blame him.

Make plenty of duas for yourselves.
