Ask an Alim

Music is a mandatory subject in the new school curriculum.

Q:

Salam

I run a secular school in Kenya. I am in a dilemma. In the new school curriculum, music is mandatory,  the school should  provide instruments, and music teacher for classes. Kindly guide.

A:

Wa Alaykumussalam

Thank you for your query.

If you are the owner running the secular school and according to the government or curriculum, your school must have a music class and provide musical instruments, then you can play the Halaal music.

Or if possible, you can teach the students something else other than music in the music period.

Forbidden music is the music that is suitable for entertainment and amusement gatherings, even if it does not arouse sexual temptations.

Permissible music is the music that is not suitable for such gatherings, even if it does not soothe the nerves like the martial music and that played at funerals.

Read the rulings of music in detail according to Ayatullah al-Udhma Sayyid Ali Sistany: https://www.sistani.org/english/book/46/2071/

Greater sins volume 1: https://www.al-islam.org/greater-sins-volume-1-sayyid-abdul-husayn-dastghaib-shirazi

The 15th greater sin mentioned in this book speaks about Music in-depth with the ahadith regarding music
