Marriage without Parents Consent

Q:

Assalamu Alaikum. I am a Muslim girl, a qualified Lawyer. Almost 25years old. I want to marry an adult and responsible Muslim male I love and trust. But my family do not approve. I have been asking for their permission for over 2years now and they still wont allow me to marry him. I have tried multiple times to convince my family that they should allow me to marry him, they still wont agree. Can i get married through other means even though i live in a non-Muslim country, where i have no other family members? Will i be committing a sin?

A:

Alaykum Salaam

In Shia Islam the permission of the father or male guardian of the girl is necessary, especially when she has never been married before.

Only in exceptional circumstances can this be waived, when it can be proved in front of an Islamic scholar that there is zulm (injstuce) being done on the girl.

The rest of the time such a marriage is not allowed.
