Marriage without father

Q:

Salam,

I am a shia girl and I want to marry a shia man. However, my father is sunni and would not allow me to get married to a shia. Is this a valid enough reason to not get my father’s consent? Which marja should I follow as I want to marry him.

Thank you

A:

Wa Alaikum al-salam

Thanks for your question

According to Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi if a girl is above 30 and can understand and decide correctly for herself, she could marry without her father’s consent.

According to Ayatollah Sistani the marriage must be with fathers consent; if his rejection is for no reason and by his rejection she loses her chance of proper marriage, then she could marry without his permission
