Ask an Alim

Marriage as a revert and family reaction

Q:

Esselamu alaikum. I am a revert sister from Europe and I found the person I want to marry. He is a very good muslim and we both know we should definitely marry. He lives in a different country and due to that I would have to leave my non muslim family to live with him. What I am very afraid of is my family’s reaction to that and if islamicly I can hurt them this much as I am scared that this would be against my duties as a muslim towards my parents. They don’t accept my religion and will not accept my husband only because he is a muslim. That’s why I wonder is it okay to override he duty I have for them and although I know I should tell them everything, still be free to do what I know I should- marry and leave.

Thank you for your Question.
Your parents certainly have a right on you and vice versa. But it is a known thing that a girl would marry and move to her husbands house. Your story in that case is no different. You too will get married and move to your husbands house regardless his faith.
Hence, this shouldn’t bother you. However you should know that your role as a Muslim is more than a regular persons responsibility. Your duty towards your parents is more since, for them, you’re representing a religion and you certainly want to show them the beauty that first attracted yourself!
Therefore, be it from near or far, you should make sure that you fulfill all their rights on you.
To know your rights on them and theirs on you kindly refer to the following link

In the Name of Allah, the All-merciful, the All-compassionate Know – God have mercy upon you – that God has rights against you and that these encompass you in every movement through which you move, every rest through which you rest, every way-station in which you reside, every limb which you employ, and every instrument which you put to work.
