Ask an Alim

Marriage and mahramiyat with step children

Q:

Can my brother marry a girl who has a daughter and she is baligh (9 years) old? If he can marry that girl then her daughter is mehraam or na mehraam? If she is na mehraam then what are rules of hijab?

A:

Waalykum salam

Thank you for your Question

your Brother can certainly marry a woman who has been previously married and either is widow right now or is Islamically divorced.

Her daughter however, will not be Mahram to your brother. That’s right. You must speak to your local Aalim to find other ways that maybe availabile.

Hijab ideally has to cover her entire body except her hand to the wrist and face.
