Ask an Alim

Knowing about my fiance, sins in the past.

Q:

I found out about the guy I  will be marrying that he has done alot of sins in the past like eating Haram and having Haram relationship but he has changed now, and is religious and eats halal. Should I still marrying him?

A:

Salamun Alaykum

Thank you for your query.

If the other marriage criteria are met then this does not prevent one from marrying. If you are certain that he had become a good practicing Muslim and stopped eating haram and having Haram relationship then you can marry him. We all are not infallible and indulge in sins and are not flawless and one day we realize and make ourselves better so we can give the room to the others.

Not to forget, the research should be good enough before the marriage as after marrying it is not easy to separate or get back to the initial stage so please make sure you have researched about him and you are certain of his improvement and you can also speak to him regarding this if he knows you have come to know about all his past and if you see he has really improved then you can marry if the other criteria of marriage are met.

The woman and her guardians should give importance to the qualities of the man she chooses to marry. She should not marry except a man who is religious, chaste, of good character, not a drunkard or someone who commits sins and evil deeds.

It is better not to reject the proposition of a man who is religious and of good character. The Prophet has said, “When a man whose religion and character pleases you comes to you [with a proposition], then marry him. If you do not do so, there will be chaos and a great corruption in the world.” (Wasa’ilu ‘sh-Shi’a, vol. 20, p. 35.)
