Ask an Alim

What is the khums ruling on wedding/bridal jewellery received as gifts from family/friends to the bride?

Q:

Salaam

What is the ruling on wedding/bridal jewellery received as gifts from family/friends to the bride?

Does khums have to be be paid on a yearly basis on unworn Jewellery for each year?

From what I understand it’s only meant to be paid once on the jewellery that has not been worn in the first year of it being received? Hence it’s not a recurring payment on annual basis?

Please clarify

Wa-Alaykum Assalam Wa Rahmtu-Allah,

In the Name of Allah, the All-Beneficent, the All-Merciful.

1. What is the ruling on wedding/bridal jewellery received as gifts from family/friends to the bride?

They are the property of the gift recipient – and as such… if not used before the date of annual khums year, khums is payable.

See question 10 here – https://www.sistani.org/english/qa/01234/

2. Does khums have to be be paid on a yearly basis on unworn Jewellery for each year?

If it is has been worn in the first year for it’s purpose (ie as an ornament) then there is no khums on it…..
