Ask an Alim

Is khums applicable on money to buy a house that was not found in the same year.

Q:

If a father gives his son money to buy a house(50K), but a house was not found within the same year, does khums need to be paid on the money? A house was purchased with that money, but not within a year of getting the money from the father. Does khums need to be paid or not?

A:

Salam alaykum.

According to A. Sistani, money that is saved for the purchase of a house is not exempt from khums. So if it hasnt been used to buy the house before the time to pay khums khums is applicable to it.
