Ask an Alim

khums is payable on items i use on daily basis

Q:

Salam,

I would like to ask whether khums is payable on the following: rent for my university accommodation, a car gifted to me and electronic items such as a laptop that I use on a daily basis.

Please note the rent and the items above were paid for by my father, however he does not pay any khums so I do not know if whether I should pay khums on these things or if khums is not required to be paid by me?

Thank you in advance.

A:

Wa-Alaykum Assalam Wa Rahmtu-Allah,

In the Name of Allah, the All-Beneficent, the All-Merciful.

Khums is not payable on these items if used before the khums year.

Sayyid Sistani’s website states:

Question: If a person gives me a gift from which he has not paid Khums, is it necessary for me to pay Khums on it?
Answer: The person who recieves the gift is not required to pay anything. Yes, it is obligatory to pay Khums from it, if a year runs over it.
