Ask an Alim

Does khums apply on money that one saves for the purchase of a house or for a wedding.

Q:

Hello.

I currently need to pay khums and have 2 issues.

  1. I am saving for a house. My father has inherited me a house in a different country however the value of this house is small compared to me purchasing a house in the UK. As I am saving to buy a house in the UK, do I need to pay Khums as there is no khums on saving for a house to reside in?
  2. The ruling states khums is not payable if saving for your childrens wedding. As my father has passed away, the money I earn goes towards my wedding. I have a set amount that I think I will spend in my wedding. Am I allowed to set aside that money for my wedding?
A:

Salam alaykum,

I am assuming that you are a muqallid of Ayatullah Sistani. According to him, khums should be paid on the money that one saves for the purchase of a house or for a wedding. Hope that helps. If you are a muqallid of some other mujtahid please inform me and I will check their ruling as well.
