Issue of FADAK is a controversial topic between shia and sunni sects for around 1400 years.

Shia claim that hazrat SYEDA FATIMA ZAHRA Salaam ullah ilaihaa claimed FADAK from caliph but was denied on the basis of hadeeth that INHERITANCE OF PROPHETS isnt distributed among their descendants.According to Shia debaters there is no such HADEETH and it was an absolute lie.But in shia hadeeth books following sahih hadeeth is found and quoted by sunni debaters.

Al-Kulayni narrates in al-Kafi:

Abu ‘Abdillah (Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq) says that Rasulullah said: “… And the ‘Ulama are the heirs of the Ambiya; and the Ambiya did not leave dinars and dirhams as inheritance; but they left knowledge. Therefore whosoever takes knowledge has taken a great portion.” (al-Kafi, vol. 1 p. 42)
Regarding the authenticity of this Hadeeth, ‘Allamah Muhammad Baqir Majlisi states in his commentary on al-Kafi, entitled Mir’at al-’Uqul:[This] Hadeeth has two chains of narration. The first is majhul [contains an unknown narrator], and the second is hasan or muwaththaq. [Together] they do not fall short of being Sahih. (Mir’at al-’Uqul, vol. 1 p. 111)

Second sahih hadees is as follows.

‘Ali ibn Ibrahim narrates from his father, from Hammad ibn ‘Isa, on the authority of [‘Abdullah ibn Maymun] al-Qaddah that Abu ‘Abdillah [Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq] ‘alayhis salam said: Rasulullah ‘alayhi wa-alihi wasallam said: “Whoever walks a path seeking therein knowledge, Allah will lead him on a road to Jannah… And the ‘Ulama are the heirs of the Ambiya; and the Ambiya did not leave dinars and dirhams as inheritance; but they left knowledge. Therefore whosoever takes knowledge has taken a great portion.” (al-Kafi, Kitab Fadl al-’Ilm, Bab Sifat al-’Ilm wa-Fadlihi, Hadeeth no. 2)

To this narration IMAM E Khomeini appends the following remark:

The narrators of this tradition are all reliable and trustworthy. The father of ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim [namely Ibrahim ibn Hashim] is not only reliable; he is one of the most reliable and trustworthy narrators. (al-Hukumat al-Islamiyyah, p. 133, published by Markaz Baqiyyat Allah al-A’zam, Beirut)

Secondly sunni debaters claim that SHIA have absolutely NO SAHIH HADEES in their own books regarding conflict between syeda FATIMA ZAHRA salm ullah ilaiha and caliph and shia use AHLE SUNNAT Books.If shias have even a single sahih hadees on fadak they should present.



Thank you for your question. These hadith are about spiritual inheritance and they do not contradict the clear Qur’anic injunctions concerning inheritance or the verses which stipulate the inheritance of previous prophets. If they were deemed as contradictory to the Qur’an they would be considered unacceptable, even if their chains were sahih, as the chain being sahih is not the only consideration in the authenticity of a hadith. Indeed, the most important factor is that it does not contradict the outward meaning of the Qur’an. Fadak was not an issue of inheritance as it was gifted to Lady Fatemah (as) during the lifetime of the Prophet (saw) and some historians have claimed that the speech of Lady Fatemah (as) was concerning other lands which were her inheritance.

As for the confiscation of Fadak not being in sahih traditions in Shia sources, that is because the issue of Fadak is a historical one and the existence of a conflict over Fadak is a historical fact attested to by historical chroniclers. The Shia do not have independent historical sources as the historical facts are something that is shared by both sects. Furthermore, the criteria of sahih or not is not a concern in history, as those with an understanding of historiography are aware. So the shared historical accounts, the repeated reference to the usurpation of Fadak thereafter and traditions within the Shii corpus of ahadith, even if there is no sahih tradition among them, is enough to attest to the factuality of the confiscation of Fadak.
