Ask an Alim

islamic way of greeting ignored

Q:

Assalamu aleikum,

Some of our sunni brothers and sisters have been ill-advised and told not to greet or reply the to the greeting of the followers of Ahlulbait (as). So I often find myself in the situation where my Islamic greeting is ignored and where Muslims greet me with “Hi!” if at all they greet me!
What should one do in that situation: continue to greet the islamic way, knowing the person will not reply or use “good morning” and the likes as greetings, or say nothing?

A:

Waalykum salam

Thank you for your Question.

It is the norm of Muslims to greet one another as ‘Assalamu Alaykum.’ There is a lot of hasanah for the person who initiates this greeting while it’s Wajib on the opposite person to reply to it. Hence, one should continue the norm of Muslims as is, and leave the opposite to decide to either stick to the obligatory gesture or leave it out.

Atleast it will show that the lovers of AHLUL BAYT (s) Stick to the Sunnah in the real sense.

Hope this helps,
Regards,
