Ask an Alim

Is Workout music allowed? I don’t mean music that you dance to, some workouts have music which then gives you a timer between the next move.

Q:

I want to attend a ladies only workout class, but the moves have music between them which then time you down for the next move. Is this permissible? The moves are not designed to be dancing to the music.

A:

Wa-Aaykum Salam

Thank you for your question

Music is haram and not permissible. From what I understand from your query is that, the music is only used to indicate one move has finished and another has to begin. In this case, many ways can be adopted to do so. Besides this, I find it wise to mention that, other exercises are specifically designed to move to the dances like zumba. This can be problematic (mahal-e-Ishkal)
