Ask an Alim

is Trip to Israel against muslim religion

Q:

Salaam Alaykum, I’m planning on going to Israel to see Jerusalem Inshallah with family. Another Muslim told me it’s against Islam to go support a country like Israel by tourism, and that it’s my job as a Muslim to stand against Israel. I don’t understand, many Muslims live there too. I don’t like to be involved in politics that’s not my business and how is this making me a bad Muslim or going against my religion? Please reply back let me know if going to Israel is going against Islam? Thank You

A:

Salaamun alaykum

Muslims have a duty towards each other and that includes not supporting those who oppress them, as well as being concerned over their affairs. As for visiting Jerusalem, there is no problem in going for the visitation of its holy places, however in our current time there is no reason to visit there specifically, as there are other places of visitation that do not entail supporting a regime repressive to the indigenous Muslims of that area in the way Israel is oppressive towards the Palestinian Muslims . At the same time, if you intend to help those Muslims through your visitation, that is praiseworthy.

May you always be successful
